What’s so Special about Easter?

What’s so special about Easter? Easter is the biggest Sunday of the year for followers of Jesus. More people gather for church on Easter than any other Sunday. Oftentimes Easter is an occasion for celebrating, seeing family, and playing games. So what’s so special about Easter?

Easter is the day we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus. It is the lynchpin of the entire Christian faith. Without the resurrection, Jesus is left as a great teacher, or a moral person, but not God made flesh.

And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins. Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ are lost. If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are of all people most to be pitied. – 1 Corinthians 15:17-19

These are strong words! Our entire relationship with God depends on the resurrection. As a friend of mine put it once, without the resurrection, “we got nothin’.” The resurrection of Christ has great implications for all of us. So what’s so special about Easter?

  1. Our God is Alive.
“I am the Living One; I was dead, and now look, I am alive forever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades.” – Revelation 1:18

We do not serve a dead god or a god that never lived. We serve the God that is alive in the person of Jesus. God created all the universe, the earth, moon, and stars. He created the most minute molecules. He created each of us. He is so powerful, not even death could contain him. Jesus is alive!

  2. Our Salvation is Secure.
“But because Jesus lives forever, he has a permanent priesthood. Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them.” – Hebrew 7:24-25

Our salvation is secure because of the resurrection. A dead god cannot help anyone. But Jesus is alive! And he is ready to save any who would turn to him.

After Jesus saves us, he does not leave us to figure out life on our own. He constantly intercedes for us. That means he is constantly praying for you. Jesus is standing alongside you in the midst of every heartache you suffer. Because of the resurrection, you can be confident to know your standing before God is secure.

  3. We can be with God.

“For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive in the Spirit.” – 1 Peter 3:18

Without Christ, we are separate from God. Our sin builds a barrier that keeps us from him. Jesus came to destroy that barrier. Through his death and resurrection, we now have the opportunity to be with God.

  4. We have Hope for Eternal Life.

“Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?” – John 11:25

Hope is based on certainty. It refers to looking forward to the certain coming of a person or event. All who have turned to Jesus can be certain of eternal life because of the resurrection.
